paint job, suspension upgrades and a lot of cosmetic stuff, I think I blew the motor today. What started off as a "lifter tick" type sound (that of course Nissan could not diagnose), suddenly became a loud knocking sound while driving to work on I-10 today. I pulled over and looked under the hood (as my Z was sputtering and dying). Sounded like a broken belt flapping around from inside the car. Under the hood, everything seemed to be intact, no smoke, leaks, loose belts, or any other tell-tale signs of trouble. So, I restart her and drive slowly off of the interstate and pulled over to the side of the road. By now the "knocking" is unbearable and the car will not even idle without dying. No obvious oil leaks, smoke, etc., but the temp did raise to about 3/4 on the gauge. My first guess is a broken rod bearing. Any other thoughts? I had the car towed to Nissan, but they are pretty ignorant here in Mississippi. If, in fact, I did throw a rod bearing, what other types of damage would have been caused by this? Cylinder / block / valve damage, etc. Will the motor need a complete rebuild (it ran perfect yesterday, aside from the mysterious ticking), or can the single rod / piston be replaced from under the car (motor in)? Any thoughts, ideas would be appreciated. - My car is a 92NA - Intake & exhaust only engine mods, with 140K. - Thanks, Kerry
